Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council warn of scammers making bogus calls to sheltered housing tenants

HINCKLEY and Bosworth Borough Council (HBBC) have made sheltered housing tenants aware of a new scam which is doing the rounds, where scammers – who state they are “working with the Borough Council” – are making bogus calls to the tenants.

Today (Tuesday, 1 February), a spokesperson for the local authority issued a warning regarding the scam on social media today, through their official Facebook page.

Fresh concerns had been raised regarding the scam after a local housing tenant had informed the Council that she had received a recent call, where the caller asked if she had any damp in her bedroom or bathroom, as well as any leaking taps in her home.

The Borough Council spokesperson has publicly clarified on social media that they would not make calls like this regarding repairs for those in sheltered housing.

They said: “Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council will not call you and ask for personal information, or enquire if any repairs need doing in your home.”

They continued: “As a council tenant, all repair works would be carried out by our Housing Repairs team.”

Borough residents are being encouraged to inform anybody that they know who is a sheltered housing tenants of the new scam.

The Council are urging residents who feel that something does not sound right or feel right after getting a call like this, to inform them over the phone, on 01455 238141.
