Today (15 December), contractors have started carrying out working inside of the former Motor World, on Regent Street, with Western Power Distribution employees, who are helping to install electrics and power into the building, from the exterior.

The work has started after the ‘green light’ was given to transform the top floor of the Regent Street-based building into six flats, whilst the ground floor retains its retail use, but with altered windows and a new entrance door.

Temporary yellow construction barriers have also been installed by construction firm Kier Group, so that exterior works are able to take place, with an apology signposted on the barriers, for “any inconvenience caused during these essential hours”.

Plans were initially lodged with Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council (HBBC) for the six flats in May 2018, and these were approved in June, just a month later.

Then, some time later in March 2020, the developer decided to seek permission to install a new shopfront with alterations to the rear, which was approved in June 2020.

The shopfront plans will see a new entrance door fitted, a cream-painted render to infill, ‘adapted’ shop front windows, and new roof windows.

It has been stressed by the developers that the existing windows at the front elevation needed to be replaced – and will be – as the existing ones are “not viable for repairs”.

In February, planners gave the ‘thumbs up’ to remove the eternal staircase at the rear,  as well as permission to remove the third floor development and roof lights.

At the time of publication, it is not yet known who the new occupant of the retail unit would be, once the works are completed.
