BANKING FIRM Santander are set to pull the shutters down on a total of 111 of their branches across England this July.
Santander UK, the British arm of the Spanish-founded Santander Group have announced yesterday (25 March) that they are set to close over 100 stores.
They had made the difficult decision to axe their stores due to the decline in use of banking in-store over recent years.
The high street locations are set to close over the course of the month of July, over the start, middle, and end of the month – they will not close on the same day.
Locally, this comes as a blow to seven different high street stores across Leicestershire, with the following stores set to shut down:
- Ashby-de-la-Zouch (Market Street)
- Blaby (Crossways House)
- Hinckley (Castle Street)
- Leicester (Horsefair Street)
- Leicester (Narborough Road)
- Oadby (The Parade)
- Syston (Melton Road)
Most of the branches which are closing are less than three miles from another Santander branch, with the furthest distance being five miles away.
Adam Bishop, Head of Branches for Santander UK, said: “Branch usage by customers has fallen considerably over recent years so we have made the difficult decision to consolidate our presence in areas where we have multiple branches relatively close together.
“The majority of the closing branches are within three miles of another branch and the furthest is five miles away.
“We will provide every support to customers of closing branches to find alternative ways to bank with us that best suit their individual needs.
“We are also working alongside our unions to support colleagues through these changes and to find alternative roles for those impacted wherever possible.
“We continue to believe that branches have an important role to play and we expect the size of our network to remain stable for the foreseeable future.
“We are committed to supporting our customers and responding to changes in the way customers want to access services.”
Hinckley closing, Nuneaton remaining
Hinckley’s branch is set to close at the end of July on 29 July 2021, but residents should not fret as the nearby Nuneaton store, which is just a stone’s throw away, will remain.
Santander revealed that 90 per cent of Hinckley residents have already been using additional ways to complete their banking, with 35 per cent already being done at another Santander branch, whilst 75 per cent manage their money online either through telephone or mobile banking.
Town-goers will have to make use of the Barclays and NatWest cash points once the branch goes for good.
Nearby Narborough HQ to close
As well as closing Leicestershire branches, they are set to leave their Narborough-based corporate headquarters at Carlton Park on King Edward’s Avenue in the village.
They will be re-locating over to the Buckinghamshire town of Milton Keynes in their newly-acquired ‘state-of-the art’ corporate headquarters, which they are investing a grand total of £150 million in to.
The firm are moving over from Narborough to Milton Keynes as they believe that they will be given ‘excellent future access’ to talent and opportunities for their colleagues.
Nathan Bostock, Chief Executive Officer of Santander UK, said: “We are investing £150m in our state-of-the-art new campus in Milton Keynes, which will become our new headquarters.
“Milton Keynes is one of the UK’s leading technology centres and with a number of innovative education and training providers on our doorstep, we believe it will provide us with excellent future access to talent and opportunities for colleagues to innovate and develop their skills.”
