Plans for popular events to return when Covid restrictions eased

PLANS have been put in place to welcome back Hinckley’s popular Summer events this summertime, if the Government guidelines and coronavirus restrictions are eased and allow them to successfully go ahead.

Last year (2020), as public safety was the top priority, most of the larger annual events which would have usually been held by Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council in association with Hinckley BID were cancelled due to the pandemic.

This meant that only smaller events that had enabled residents to participate in a coronavirus-safe environment were able to go ahead.

This year (2021), event organisers remain much more optimistic for fun and social events in Hinckley and have announced a list of events that should be given the green light to take place.

With the newly-announced ‘road out of lockdown’ indicating that all legal restrictions for gatherings and organised events could be lifted from late June, the Borough Council have been working with the town’s Business Improvement District (BID), to provisionally plan for the return of a number of popular events.

Council bosses were ‘unsure’ earlier this month as to whether foodie favourite event, Feast Hinckley, would take place this August, but this has since been confirmed as one of the events that are on the returning list of events for the summer, if it does not get scrapped like last year.

Below is the full list of events which are being planned to return to the town this year.

Full list of returning events

  • Armed Forces Day (26 June)
  • Snapdragon’s Children’s Festival (4 – 6 August)
  • Feast Hinckley (7 – 8 August)
  • Music in the Mead (Each Saturday: 3 July – 18 September*)
  • 1st Summer Evening Vehicle Meeting (15 July)
  • 2nd Summer Evening Vehicle Meeting (19 August)
  • Proms in the Park (4 September)
  • Motorshow for Classic Cars & Vehicles of Special Interest (19 September)
  • Shop Hinckley Half Term Week & Treasure Hunt (Unannounced Date)
  • Santa’s Fun Run (Unannounced Date)
  • Santa’s Amazing Grotto (Unannounced Date)

Music in the Mead

*‘Music in the Mead’ is a returning event which will take place in the Argents Mead bandstand over the course of twelve weeks each Saturday, from 3 July until 18 September.

Performances at the popular music event in the Mead was able to take place last year (2020) as special COVID-secure arrangements were in place.

Proms in the Park

It is hoped that Hollycroft Park in Hollycroft will ‘come alive with the sound of music’, with the return of the Proms in the Park event, as the event will take place again following a six year hiatus.

The free open-air concert is set to be organised by Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council in association with the Hinckley Round Table.

Event organisers comment

Cllr. Keith Nichols, Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council’s Executive Member for Culture and Leisure, said: “We all hope that as the restrictions begin to lift, we can all look forward to getting out and doing things we enjoy doing freely with our friends and families once again this summer.

“The events calendar is important for residents and businesses alike and we’re all keen to make them successful and enjoyable, but public safety is and will remain an absolute priority so we will continue to review national advice and make any necessary changes and adaptations to operate great events everyone can enjoy safely this year.

“Until then, I’d urge everyone to keep following the guidance so that we can all return to some normality this summer.”

Steve Wegerif, Director of Hinckley BID, said: “We are looking forward to bringing free Fun Events back to Hinckley this year, including our Wednesday street-entertainment events during the school Summer Holidays, our amazing Motorshow, with over 300 vehicles already entered, our autumn ‘Shop Hinckley Half Term Week and Treasure Hunt’, the ever popular Santa fun run, and our very special Santa’s Grotto.”

More information on the events can be found on the official Hinckley BID website, here.
